Leigh 10, Vale of lune 15 Febuary 1998

Sports
Leigh started the game strongly and in the opening minutes was already testing the visitors defence. A fine break by Graham look set to bring the opening points of the game but the certain score was lost when the ball as fumbled over the line.

Any notion that this was going to be Leigh’s afternoon soon eroded. Vale gained a firm control of the game; dominating possession and territory for the majority of the half. Leigh defended strongly but were their own worst enemy; every time possession was wrestled back from the visitors the ball would be given up too easily. Off loads under pressure and basic mistakes meant that the home side were lucky to get beyond 2 or 3 phases of possession before the ball was handed back.

Vale used Leigh’s mistakes to their advantage, together with robust pressure on the Leigh line out, to keep the home side firmly rooted in their own 22. Despite this pressure the Leigh defence stood firm. A penalty and a converted try the only reward for all their dominance. Leigh finally came too as the end of the half approached, possession was maintained and pressure quickly built resulting in their Stand off Colin Singleton crashing over for Leigh’s first points of the afternoon The try was converted by Singleton to make the score 7 – 10 at the close of the half.

The second half was better for the home side but too often they were guilty of the basic errors that gifted possession to the opposition. However it was Leigh that gained the first points of the half with a well taken Singleon penalty. Vale struck back with 15 minutes to go. A quick tap caught the home side napping; with the Vale centre gifted an easy score.

Any hopes of a Leigh repost were dashed by vale who used the boot to pin the home side in their own half and their advantage in the line out to prevent Leigh from building any kind of momentum.

The final whistle brought a deserved victory for the visitors but only frustration for the Leigh players and coaching staff alike. Despite being in the single digits in the statistics for possession and territory they were only beaten by the narrows of margins. A margin that would have agruably been reversed had the home side’s composure and patience prevailed. Comment & Share
